Hong Kong River Trade Terminals

An advanced Wireless Data Communication System (WDC) for the automation of the Container Terminal Operation has been designed and implemented successfully using the 2.4 GHz IEEE802.11b Wireless LAN DSSS technology. The WDC infrastructure provides a wide area high performance wireless data coverage of the entire container port measured by 1 km by 1.5 km. A total of 25 multiple radio sites was installed in the container yard. Wireless data terminals, both handheld terminal and vehicle mounted terminal, are used to access and update the container locations, and to provide automation of job order deployment. The WDC network infrastructure is designed to integrate and interoperable with the Terminal Operation System and Internal Tractor Management System. The WDC system is designed with high level of resilience to recover automatically upon single point of failure in the system.
