Hong Kong Container Terminals

Our company has implemented successfully a wide area high-speed wireless LAN and UHF mobile data systems for the Container Terminals in Hong Kong. The system is a multi-site system covering a 3 sq. km site. The system is one of the world first & largest single integrated wireless LAN systems installed in Hong Kong. Because the container port operates non-stop 24 hours a day and 7 days a week and the system is an integral part of port operation, it must be highly reliable and is considered mission critical by the customer.

The system provides wireless data communication links to over hundred mobile cranes in the container yard from the corporate host computer system. The interconnect is a high speed, high bandwidth & error protected link that is transparent to both the host system and the crane-borne computer. The system equipment provides roaming as a crane move amongst the many base sites in the container yard. The system equipment operates in the licence free 2.4GHz ISM band. The system uses spread spectrum technology with link speed of 1.6M bits per second. The system is IEEE 802.11 compliant. An UHF private mobile data system is implemented in the same premises providing an ubiquitous coverage for hundreds of mobile workers and vehicles throughout the entire container yard.

Because the system is mostly outdoors, all system components are weatherized and heavy-duty type. Unlike most mobile wireless LAN equipment which are used in an office environment and on laptop PCs, the mobile LAN equipment in this application is in a hostile industrial mobile environment and is designed and built to survive in such extreme situation.
