Hong Kong SITA WesTel provided telecom consultancy services to SITA's VHF Aircom Remote Ground Station (RGS) which is used for communications of data information between aircraft and airlines office via the SITA ground network. There are a total of 354 of RGS sites all over the world with 76 airlines and non-airline users. Most RGS are situated at the airport which has the advantage of communications to aircraft on ground as well as over-flying aircraft. The RGS is an interface equipment between aircraft and the ground network. It provides the data communications link to allow exchanges of messages between aircraft and their respective airline offices. The RGS provides a conversion of the data in a wired media to a wireless media in order to deliver messages to aircraft and vice versa. The RGS is operating within the VHF aeronautical band at a single channel frequency and the mode of transmission is half duplex. The RGS has a omni-directional coverage of 230 nautical miles of communication with aircraft flying at 35,000 feet. WesTel's engineering services included: application for type approval of the radio equipment from OFTA, radio and antenna system design, radio site design, RF signal propagation study, RF interference analysis and radio site installation.
