Mobile Resources Management, Airport A trial system of a low cost Equipment Tracking System (ETS) for the ground operators inside the Hong Kong International Airport has been completed successfully. The system is used to locate the 20,000 mobile equipment of the operators in the apron of the airport that covers an area of 1,248 hectare. The equipment are used by the operators to provide ramp handling services such as the loading and unloading of passengers, baggages, cargos, and mails etc.. The mobile equipment can be categorized into 700 powered vehicles and 1,500 non-powered dollies that include tractors, dollies, mobile loading equipment and patrol vans. The major objective of the ETS system is to maximize the mobile equipment utilization. This is achieved by providing real time statistical information of the location of various mobile equipment. Information such as the idle time of the equipment, peak usage of the equipment, types of the equipment, location of the equipment, loan status of the equipment and the equipment movement patterns can be easily obtained on the operator’s workstation display instantly. The ETS system utilizes the latest technologies in RFID devices, Satellite Global Position Systems (GPS), Mobile Data devices, Computer hardware devices, software development tools and wireless data communications network. The ETS system allows the Companies to manage the mobile equipment and field work-force activities more efficiently and effectively; achieving the ultimate goal of improving customer satisfaction, lowering of operation cost and increasing sales of products and services.
